Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sirirat Tubsungnoen Rattanachan, a faculty member in the Department of Ceramic Engineering, School of Engineering, Suranaree University of Technology, and her research team developed a “Customized Calcium Phosphate Bone Augmentation”, or personalized calcium phosphate bone graft material, is a development of bone replacement material created by Thai researchers.
It is in the form of bone cement intended for use in orthopedic surgery, particularly for bone replacement in areas particularly for bone replacement in the bone defects and bone loss. Additionally, it is used for bone augmentation in individuals with bone fractures or osteoporosis, especially the elderly. The research has advanced to the stage of Biological testing according to ISO 10993 Biocompatibility standards. Moreover, the product has been tested in animal models (In Vivo).
The research has been granted two patents. The next steps in the research include obtaining medical material certification according to FDA standards and conducting clinical trials to test medical and commercial feasibility.
The innovation was developed in collaboration with Dr. Pornthep Tangkanjanawelukul, a faculty member in the Department of Orthopedics, School of Medicine, Suranaree University of Technology (SUT), won a Silver Medal for their innovation “Customized Calcium Phosphate Bone Augmentation.” They also received a Special Award from King Khalid University, Saudi Arabia, at the 49th International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva, held on April 17-21, 2024, in Geneva, Switzerland.
