The Office of Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research & Innovation), UniMAP in collaboration with the National STEM Association,Ministry of Science, Technology & Innovation (MOSTI), Academy of Sciences Malaysia, Perlis State Education Department and Kedah State Education Department will be organizing the International STEM & Innovation Colloquia Series (ISICS)-Series 2 as follows:

The second series will feature Prof. Dr. Carl E. Wieman from Stanford University, USA. Carl Wieman is the DRC Chair in Engineering and is also a Professor of Physics & of the Graduate School of Education, Stanford University. In 1995, Carl Wieman and Eric Cornell succeeded in proving the phenomenon of BEC in a rarefied gas of rubidium atoms at an extremely low temperature. In 2001, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics together with Wolfgang Ketterle, for the achievement of Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) in dilute gases of alkali atoms, and for the early fundamental studies of the properties of the condensates.

Since 2002, Wieman has been actively involved in STEM Education. He started the non-profit project at the University of Colorado Boulder named “PhET”, which originally stood for “Physics Education Technology”. The project now designs, develops, and releases over 125 free interactive simulations for educational use in the fields of physics, chemistry, biology, earth science, and mathematics. The simulations have been translated into over 65 different languages, including Spanish, Chinese, German, and Arabic; and in 2011, the PhET website received over 25 million visitors. In October 2011, the PhET Interactive Simulations were chosen as the 2011 Microsoft Education Tech Award Laureate.

Wieman joined the University of British Columbia on the 1st of January 2007 and headed a well-endowed science education initiative there. He is currently studying expertise and problem solving in science and engineering disciplines, and how this can be better measured and taught. Most recently, he is the recipient of the 2020 Yidan International Prize for Education Research.

In his talk entitled “Taking a Scientific Approach to Science and Engineering Education”, Prof Dr Carl Wieman will share his experiences and knowledge in the scientific approach to STEM education.
