On 24 June 2026, a delegation from Suranaree University of Technology (SUT), comprising researchers from the Institute of Agricultural Technology, an artificial intelligence research team from the Institute of Engineering, and Thai traditional medicine specialists from the SUT Wellness Academy, visited the Institute of Biotechnology, College of Bioresources and Agriculture, National Taiwan University (NTU), in Taipei, Taiwan. The visit aimed to exchange research knowledge and explore further collaboration in agricultural biotechnology, biomedical engineering, robotics, and AI innovation.
The delegation was welcomed by Associate Professor Dr. Jen-Chih Chen, together with NTU faculty members, researchers, and students. Representatives of both universities introduced their respective institutions and presented research with strong potential for future academic and research collaboration.
During the agricultural biotechnology session, Associate Professor Dr. Jen-Chih Chen presented research on bacteria discovered in wastewater from pig farms that can promote the growth of microalgae. The microalgae may subsequently be developed as a sustainable source of animal feed. The research also involved an in-depth analysis of changes in wastewater microbial communities when cultured together with microalgae.

A doctoral student from the laboratory of Professor Dr. Chi-Te Liu presented research on the use of Rhodopseudomonas palustris to alleviate plant stress under saline soil and high-temperature conditions. The study examined the bacterium’s production of aminolevulinic acid, or ALA, indole-3-acetic acid, or IAA, and extracellular polymeric substances, or EPS, which act as biostimulants. Related research also investigated the combined use of the bacterium and humic acid to reduce methane emissions from rice cultivation.
In the field of biomedical engineering, Professor Dr. Tung-Wu Lu of the Department of Biomedical Engineering and the Health Science and Wellness Research Center delivered a presentation entitled “From Still Images to Living Movement: AI-Driven Innovation in Orthopaedic Imaging and Modelling.” The research applies AI and machine learning to CT image analysis to support surgical planning, the design of orthopaedic implants and prostheses, and the development of accurate movement models reflecting patients’ musculoskeletal functions.
Professor Dr. Chien-Yu Chen from the field of biomechatronics engineering presented the application of machine learning and bioinformatics to integrate genomic and epigenetic data. This work supports the development of AI models for assessing genetic variants associated with human diseases. A doctoral student supervised by Professor Ping-Lang Yen also presented innovations in medical and agricultural robotics, including a tomato-harvesting robot that uses machine learning to detect and selectively harvest ripe fruit.
Professor Dr. Che Lin of the Department of Electrical Engineering presented “Transforming Smart Healthcare: Leveraging LLMs and Time-Series Analysis for Advanced Patient Care.” The research integrates electronic health records with large language models, time-series analysis, and deep learning to develop models for assessing patients’ future risks of chronic diseases and cancer.
In the afternoon, the delegation visited laboratories specialising in robotics, plant pathology, and plant–microbe interactions. The visits provided opportunities to exchange technical knowledge and identify potential research topics involving SUT’s Institute of Agricultural Technology, Institute of Engineering, and SUT Wellness Academy and their counterparts at NTU.
National Taiwan University is one of Taiwan’s leading universities, with recognised strengths in education and multidisciplinary research. Its College of Bioresources and Agriculture encompasses academic and research areas including agriculture, biotechnology, plant pathology, microbiology, bioenvironmental systems engineering, and bioresource sciences, providing a strong foundation for interdisciplinary research and sustainable development.
The visit formed part of the academic cooperation between SUT and NTU and was intended to strengthen researcher networks, facilitate knowledge exchange, and develop collaborative projects in agricultural biotechnology, smart healthcare, robotics, bioinformatics, and artificial intelligence.
The visit was supported by the Taiwan–Thailand Science and Technology Center (TTSTC), with contributions from SUT’s Center for International Affairs, Center of Excellence in Agricultural Product Innovation, and the Institute of Engineering through its medical AI innovation research team.
